At the very end of its two-day stay in the disturbed plasma of the coronal hole, the Earth’s magnetosphere nevertheless decided not to let the forecasters down and colored the graphs of geomagnetic indices red. Graphs of auroras, by the way, too. About two hours ago a magnetic storm began on Earth.
Frankly speaking, looking at the parameters of the solar wind, it is difficult to understand what exactly triggered the storm: in the vicinity of the Earth, everything is now about the same as it has been all day. The sign of the magnetic field has changed, but over the past couple of days it has already changed ten times. Apparently, “metal fatigue” took its toll.
The event does not qualify as a record (only G1, the minimum level), but is only the second storm this month. The first and to this day only storm of July occurred on the fourth and belonged to the G3 category, that is, it was noticeably stronger. Summer as a whole is not rich in geomagnetic events (in the first two months there were only five of them, including today), although in history, of course, there have been quieter months. We are looking forward to an active autumn.
According to the forecast, the phenomenon may last until mid-morrow.
