The strongest solar flare of August has been recorded.

M1.8 solar flare on August 20, 2026

A second M-class flare has occurred on the Sun within a 24-hour period, marking the most powerful event of the month so far. It registered at magnitude M1.88. Global catalogs will likely list it as M1.8, as the level is traditionally rounded down. While the event falls far short of record-breaking levels, it stands out against the backdrop of a quiet summer Sun and the general trend of declining solar activity.

The explosion originated from the same active region—4513—that rotated onto the Earth-facing side of the Sun just yesterday, triggering a sharp spike in solar activity. Contrary to expectations, the active center is not yet running out of energy, though it inevitably will within a day or two—nature cannot be cheated. Consequently, no top-tier X-class flares are currently anticipated, although—to paraphrase a song—those who wait long enough will eventually see one.
