A G1 level magnetic storm has begun

Geomagnetic index Kp from April 16 to 18, 2026
Geomagnetic index Kp from April 16 to 18, 2026

As expected yesterday, a magnetic storm has begun on Earth. The current level is G1: the minimum on a five-point scale. The overall duration of the unstable geomagnetic period could be quite significant, from 5 to 7 days, but the acute phase is expected to last only the first 1-2 days and extend through the weekend. During this period, the geomagnetic index may occasionally rise to G2 (moderate storms). Higher values are unlikely.

By the end of today, with the onset of darkness, it will be possible to catch the aurora borealis, especially in the northern and northwestern parts of the country. This is a general forecast for now. The specific situation will need to be assessed as the weather unfolds.

This event is the second magnetic storm of April. The first occurred from the 2nd to the 4th and reached a level close to G3. Overall, the year has been exceptionally rich in geomagnetic disturbances and is currently on track for its second-highest intensity in the current century.
