The first magnetic storm of winter is expected today.

Forecast of the geomagnetic index Kp for the period from December 3 to 5, 2025

The first magnetic storm of December 2025 is expected today, the 3rd. It is caused by a combination of several factors affecting Earth: another coronal hole currently observed in the central part of the solar disk and a plasma ejection following the X-level flare that occurred on December 1st. The edge of this ejection, according to calculations, could still impact Earth at the junction of December 3rd and 4th, that is, overnight between today and tomorrow.

According to forecasts, magnetic field disturbances should not exceed the average G2 level, although they could be quite prolonged. Due to the significant width of the coronal hole, complete stabilization of the geomagnetic situation will likely occur only over the weekend. Until then, patches of yellow and red will remain on the charts.

As usual, the likelihood of auroras is expected to increase, but an accurate forecast of their intensity before the event begins is impossible. For the European part of the country, a G2 storm level is usually insufficient to observe auroras, but this relationship is not linear, and surprises are possible. You can track the current probability for a specific region here.
