Magnetic storms have begun on Earth. Canada is experiencing top-level northern lights.
The onset of planetary-scale magnetic storms is being recorded. Currently, the level is G1 (weak storms), but may increase to G2-G3 within 24 hours. These storms do not have a clearly defined, single cause and are a general response of the Earth's magnetosphere to the extremely high solar activity observed since the beginning of the month. The trigger was the arrival yesterday evening of the edge of the plasma cloud ejected into space on February 2 during the largest X8.1 flare in the past 1.5 years.
Strong auroras are currently observed in the nighttime zone of the Western Hemisphere, reaching a maximum intensity of level 10. Bright auroras are observed over all of Canada and the northern US states. The situation in Russia will clear in approximately 10 hours, when the dividing line between day and night moves to the European part of the country.
